Ecotourism in Kazakhstan: 40% growth and development of sustainable infrastructure

Kazakhstan is experiencing a steady rise in interest in ecotourism. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the number of ecotourists reached 2.8 million in 2024 — a 40% increase compared to 2022, when the figure stood at 2 million. In 2023, 2.4 million ecotourists visited the country.

The largest tourist flows are directed toward natural areas located near Almaty. Particularly popular destinations include the Ile-Alatau National Park, the Charyn Canyon, Altyn-Emel, and the Kolsai Lakes. These regions attract travelers with their diverse landscapes and the opportunity to relax in nature away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

To support the growing interest in ecotourism and ensure visitor comfort, infrastructure is being actively developed in 14 national parks across the country. Visitor centers, glamping sites, campgrounds, and other facilities aligned with sustainable tourism principles are being constructed.

In recent years, eight modern visitor centers have been built, equipped with navigation systems and informational displays. These centers help tourists navigate routes, learn more about the local flora and fauna, and familiarize themselves with the rules for visiting protected natural areas.

The development of ecotourism not only makes Kazakhstan more attractive to travelers but also contributes to environmental protection, stimulates regional development, and strengthens the country’s image as a supporter of sustainable tourism.
