What to see on a summer vacation in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is a summer destination where subtropical forests meet alpine villages, and ancient history blends seamlessly with modern architecture. If you’re planning a summer vacation in this culturally rich and naturally diverse country, here’s a regional guide to help you explore the best it has to offer.

Central and Coastal Region

Baku — the capital city — is the perfect starting point. Its Old City, the futuristic Flame Towers, and the seaside promenade offer a fusion of past and present. In summer, the Caspian breeze, vibrant nightlife, and art festivals make Baku a city that never slows down.

Absheron Peninsula also offers: beaches and resorts in Mardakan and Bilgah, Gobustan Rock Art Reserve with prehistoric carvings, Yanar Dag — a natural gas fire that never goes out.

North and Northwest

Gabala — a favorite among families, with mountain resorts, cable cars, and forest hiking trails. Great for outdoor activities and mild summer weather.

Sheki — known for its Khan’s Palace, caravanserais, and traditional crafts. Cooler temperatures and a rich cultural atmosphere.

Quba & Khinalug — a gateway to some of the highest mountain villages in the Caucasus. Khinalug, in particular, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited villages in the world.

Shamakhi — a historic city with a poetic legacy. Visit the Juma Mosque and the Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory.

Ismayilli — a lesser-known region perfect for eco-tourism, with forested mountains, waterfalls, and homestays in villages like Lahij.

South

Lankaran — alush region with tea plantations, citrus groves, and black-sand beaches. Ideal for quiet retreats and nature exploration.

Astara — on the Iranian border, known for its warm, humid climate, subtropical vegetation, and coastal relaxation.

Hirkan National Park — a biodiversity hotspot with rare plants like the ironwood tree, perfect for eco-tourists and wildlife enthusiasts.

West

Ganja — Azerbaijan’s second-largest city with a youthful energy, home to the Nizami Mausoleum and historical architecture. A short drive leads you to:

Lake Goygol — a stunning Alpine-style lake surrounded by forests — perfect for day hikes and picnics.

Naftalan — a unique spa town famous for its therapeutic oil baths. Great for wellness tourism.

North-East

Shabran & Nabran — popular seaside resorts with pine forests and sandy beaches. Great for a mix of swimming, sunbathing, and forest hikes.

Khachmaz — offers access to ancient fortresses, nature parks, and rural tourism experiences.
