In this article, we’ll explore the key elements of Uzbek clothing — the details that make the traditional Uzbek attire so recognizable and unique.
Chopon
One of the main elements of Uzbek clothing is the chopon. It is a long shirt made of cotton fabric with long sleeves that reach the wrists. There are several types of chopons: traditional, everyday, wedding, and others. Festive chopons are made from velvet or silk and are decorated with hand-embroidered patterns. Everyday chopons are made from lighter materials, such as cotton.
Kiyikcha
The kiyikcha is a fabric waist scarf used to tie the chopon. The ceremonial kiyikchas are often made from velvet and feature embroidered patterns.
Telpek
The telpek is the traditional headwear of the Khorezm region. It is a round, high fur hat, usually made from sheepskin. Traditionally, it is worn by men during celebrations and to showcase their cultural heritage.
Tubeteika
The tubeteika is a four-cornered, cone-shaped cap. In modern times, it is worn during holidays or special occasions. The most popular type is the black tubeteika with white patterns. It’s important to note that each region in Uzbekistan has its own version of the tübeteika, which differs in size, height, color, and patterns.
Makhsi
Traditional makhsi are boots made from durable sheep or goat leather. They are distinctive for having no hard sole. Due to their soft sole, makhsi are often worn with kavushi, which provide an additional layer of protection.
Classic makhsi are usually black or dark green, but in some areas of Khorezm, red women's makhsi are popular and are worn at weddings and other celebrations.
Koylek
The koylek is a long dress, usually made from silk, adras — a traditional Uzbek fabric, or velvet. Festive koyleks are decorated with embroidery, patterns, or beads. There are also more comfortable koyleks made for daily wear.
Salwar
Salwar are wide, loose trousers made from cotton fabric. They are typically worn underneath the koylek.
Abaya
The abaya is a long-sleeved robe worn by women. It can be made from a variety of fabrics. Today, abayas are often made from adras and are decorated with embroidery, stones, or lace.
Jewelry
Jewelry has always been an important element of Uzbek women's clothing. Gold jewelry, in particular, is highly popular and highly valued.
