Top 10 museums in Uzbekistan everyone should visit

Uzbekistan is a land of the Great Silk Road, ancient cities, and a rich cultural heritage. Its museums are true time machines that reveal the mysteries of the East, the legacy of great civilizations, and the unique character of the Uzbek people. This overview presents ten outstanding museums that offer a deeper understanding of Uzbekistan.

State museum of History of Uzbekistan

This is the country's main historical museum, featuring more than 250,000 exhibits. Here you’ll find rare archaeological discoveries, ancient manuscripts, traditional clothing, weapons, and jewelry. The museum covers all periods of Uzbekistan’s history — from the Stone Age to independence.

Museum of Applied Arts of Uzbekistan

Located in a historic mansion with exquisite Eastern architecture. The museum showcases a rich collection of traditional Uzbek crafts: vibrant suzani embroidery, carved doors, ceramics, and gold and silk thread embroidery. The atmosphere reflects the spirit of folk aesthetics and beauty.

Amir Timur museum

A grand building with a bluish dome and a marble hall inside. The museum tells the story of the great military leader’s era — his campaigns, reforms, and contributions to science and culture. Exhibits include replicas of weapons, fortress models, historical maps, and rare manuscripts.

Archaeological museum of Samarkand

Situated on the territory of the ancient settlement of Afrasiab. Inside are frescoes, household items, jewelry, ceramics, and sculptures that reveal the lifestyle of ancient Sogdiana’s people. Particularly noteworthy are wall painting fragments from the 7th century.

Avicenna museum

Located near the birthplace of the great scholar Ibn Sina. The exhibition introduces his medical and philosophical works, illustrates his healing methods, and shows his influence on both European and Arab sciences.

Savitsky State museum of art of Karakalpakstan

Often called the “Louvre of the Desert.” It houses over 90,000 artworks, including Soviet-banned avant-garde, works by Russian artists, and a vast collection of Karakalpak ethnography. The museum gained fame thanks to Igor Savitsky, an enthusiast who preserved countless masterpieces from destruction.

Bukhara State museum-reserve

Located in the ancient Ark Citadel, once the residence of Bukhara’s rulers. The exhibition spans from ancient times to the early 20th century, featuring jewelry, weapons, coins, carpets, and documents related to the Khanate’s history.

Termez Archaeological museum

This museum holds a unique collection of items from Buddhist monasteries, tombs, and ancient settlements excavated in southern Uzbekistan. Highlights include Buddha statues, bas-reliefs, and elements of Kushan-era temple architecture.

Ichan-Kala open-air museum

Located in Khiva. The collection features traditional household items, national costumes, jewelry, musical instruments, and scenes from the everyday life of Khorezm’s residents. The museum offers an immersive experience of an ancient Eastern city.

Railway museum

An interactive open-air museum showcasing dozens of locomotives, carriages, and other equipment from the late 19th century to today. Visitors can step inside trains, explore old railway maps, instruments, and staff uniforms.
