How to get a visa to Kyrgyzstan: a detailed guide for travelers

Kyrgyzstan is one of the most accessible countries to enter Central Asia. In many cases, a visa is not required at all, and if it is, you can apply online or through an embassy. Here is a breakdown of all visa options and entry rules.

Visa-free entry

Citizens of more than 60 countries can visit Kyrgyzstan without a visa for a period of 30 to 90 days. For example, Russians, Kazakhs, and Belarusians can stay in the country for an unlimited time. Citizens of European, Asian, American, and Australian countries are also allowed visa-free stays ranging from 30 to 90 days, depending on their nationality.

Special rules apply to Cuban citizens traveling with a tour package and Maldivian citizens for up to 30 days.

Electronic visa

If a visa is required, the easiest way to obtain it is online at evisa.e-gov.kg. Citizens of any country, including Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, can apply. The processing time is up to 3 working days. The electronic visa is available for 30 or 90 days and requires entry through specific checkpoints, including Bishkek and Osh airports.

Visa through an embassy

Visas can also be issued at Kyrgyz embassies abroad. In most cases, an invitation from a Kyrgyz sponsor — visa support — is required. Exceptions include citizens of countries like Venezuela, Iran, Indonesia, the Philippines, and South Africa, who can obtain a visa without an invitation.

Registration upon arrival

If you enter Kyrgyzstan with a visa, you must register with the local police within five days, including weekends. Failing to do so may result in a fine of 10 000 soms, and departure may be delayed until the fine is paid. However, citizens of 92 countries are exempt from this requirement for a period ranging from 8 to 90 days, depending on nationality.

Restricted areas

Certain regions of Kyrgyzstan, especially near the Chinese border and in the Issyk-Kul and Naryn regions, require a special permit for access. This includes places like Karkyra, Inylchek, Kel-Suu, At-Bashi, and the area around Victory Peak. Traveling to these areas without a permit can be dangerous and may cause issues with local authorities.
