The first meeting of the Working Group on the Study and Creation of a UNESCO Geopark in Turkmenistan was held at the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
The event was attended by the Executive Secretary of the country’s National Commission for UNESCO Affairs, Chinar Rustemova, as well as heads and specialists from relevant agencies, the Caspian Sea Institute, the State Corporation Turkmengeology, and scientists.
Rustemova introduced participants to the procedure for creating UNESCO Geoparks in the country, relevant regulatory documents, and the experience of several other nations in this field. She also explained the requirements and procedures necessary for the establishment of geoparks and their nomination to the Global Geoparks Network of this international organization.
Following the meeting, members of the working group emphasized that Turkmenistan has unique geological sites that could serve as the foundation for a UNESCO Geopark. Participants outlined further steps for project implementation, including selecting a specific location from the proposed options and preparing the legal, scientific, ecological, and geological justification for its establishment.
