Here are 20 essential words and phrases to know before your journey begins.


Salem — Hello

A simple and friendly greeting. Say it with a smile.


Rakhmet — Thank you

One of the most useful words you can learn.


Kosh keldiniz — Welcome

Said with warmth when someone invites you in.


Sau bolynyz — Goodbye

Use this polite farewell when leaving a store or someone’s home.


Iya / Zhok — Yes / No

Basic, but incredibly handy in any situation.


Kalai? — How? or How is it?

Often heard in phrases like “How are you?” — Kalai zhagday?


Zhaksy — Good

A common response to “How are you?” or to show agreement.


Tamak — Food

Yel — Nation / Homeland

Used with pride. You'll see it in expressions like Yelimiz — our country.
