Oil Field Origins
Balkanabat was founded in 1933 as a settlement near the Trans-Caspian Railway to support the development of a nearby oil field. Today, it serves as an industrial hub for the oil and gas sector.
Nebit-Dag
The city was originally named Neftedag, then Nebit-Dag — meaning “Oil Mountain.” It received its current name, Balkanabat, in 1999.
Close to the Ancient Silk Road
Just outside the city lies the Tasharvat caravanserai, once an important stop along a branch of the ancient Silk Road.
Film Location
In 1968, Balkanabat’s landscapes appeared on screen for the first time. Scenes from the Soviet comedy The Golden Calf were filmed here.
Balkanabat Power Plant
The city also plays a key role in energy production thanks to the Balkanabat gas-turbine power station. It supplies electricity to the region and exports it to neighboring countries.
