Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, is one of the world’s most unique and visually striking cities. Known for its gleaming white marble buildings, grand monuments, and symmetry-driven urban planning, Ashgabat is best appreciated from above. Whether you're a curious traveler or a local in search of a new perspective, here are top six spots to take in panoramic views of the city.
Wedding Palace Viewpoint
Shaped like an eight-pointed star with a golden globe on top, it is not only an architectural highlight but also offers one of the best views in the city. From its upper floors, visitors can see wide boulevards, elegant fountains, and the green belt that frames much of Ashgabat’s central district.
Monument of Neutrality
This 95-meter towering structure topped with a golden statue of former President Saparmurat Niyazov rotates slowly throughout the day and is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. An elevator takes visitors up to a viewing platform, where sweeping views stretch across the white-marbled city and out to the foothills of the Kopet Dag mountains.
Ferris Wheel at Alem Cultural Center
Certified by the Guinness World Records as the world’s largest indoor Ferris wheel, this marvel is located inside a glass-and-steel structure shaped like a giant wheel. While technically "indoors," its design allows for wide-angle views of Ashgabat’s southern districts and surrounding desert landscape. A great family-friendly option.
Independence Monument
One of the tallest monuments in Ashgabat — 118 meters, the Arch of Triumph, also known as the Monument to Independence offers access to an upper-level viewing deck via elevator. From here, you can take in the city's radial layout, monument-lined avenues, and well-maintained gardens.
Ashgabat Cable Car
The Ashgabat cable car begins near the city’s outskirts and takes visitors up into the foothills of the Kopet Dag mountains. From the summit, you get a panoramic view of the entire city laid out below — a brilliant contrast between the geometric urban landscape and the rugged natural terrain. This is especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset.
Yyldyz Hotel Rooftop Lounge
This luxury hotel shaped like a five-pointed star offers arguably the most refined viewing experience in the city. From the top-floor restaurant or rooftop lounge, guests enjoy sweeping views of Ashgabat’s western districts, with the Kopet Dag providing a dramatic backdrop. It's an ideal spot for a sunset dinner or night photography.
