Tourism in Kyrgyzstan is developing rapidly, attracting more and more travelers with its unique natural beauty and cultural heritage. Among the country’s many treasures are its lakes — and Sary-Chelek stands out as one of the most remarkable.
Where is Sary-Chelek
Sary-Chelek Lake is located in the eponymous nature reserve in western Kyrgyzstan, about 500 kilometers from the capital, Bishkek. This natural wonder is hidden deep within the celestial Tien Shan mountains, sitting at an altitude of approximately 1873 meters above sea level and stretching 7500 meters from northeast to southwest. It is the second-deepest lake in Kyrgyzstan and the third-deepest in Central Asia, with a maximum depth of 234 meters.
The climate in the reserve is temperate. Summers are warm, with daytime temperatures reaching around 25°C, while winters are cold. Surrounded by mountains, the lake is accessible only from two directions. The northern route is more difficult, passing through steep mountain passes and other obstacles. Tourists are recommended to take the southern route for a smoother journey.
Attractions of Sary-Chelek
Nestled within one of Kyrgyzstan’s most scenic nature reserves, the lake itself is the main attraction. Its crystal-clear, bright-blue water reflects the surrounding untouched landscape like a mirror. Steep shores covered in thick forests, and a rich variety of flora and fauna make this place truly unforgettable.
More than 1000 species of plants grow in the reserve, alongside dozens of bird species and over 30 types of animals — many of which are listed in the Red Book of endangered species. Hunting is strictly prohibited here.
What Sary-Chelek offers to visitors
Kyrgyzstan is well-known for ecotourism and hiking. The area around Sary-Chelek offers a variety of scenic trails perfect for nature walks. Along the way, you might spot wild deer, mountain goats, or rare plant species.
There are several observation decks with breathtaking views of the reserve and the lake itself.
In addition to Sary-Chelek, the reserve is home to several smaller lakes — Iiri-Kol, Aram-Kol, Choychok-Kol, Tuyuk-Kol, Kyla-Kol, and Bakaly-Kol — each of them equally beautiful.

How to get to Sary-Chelek
If you're traveling from Bishkek, there are two main ways to reach Sary-Chelek.
Option 1: by private car
This gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace. It’s best to leave Bishkek early in the morning, as the drive takes at least nine hours one way. The road passes through the Too-Ashuu mountain pass, where you can stop to rest, grab lunch, or take a walk through the scenic Chychkan Gorge with its lush forests.
Next, you’ll encounter the Toktogul Reservoir — the largest in Central Asia. For nearby towns and villages, it's a local version of Issyk-Kul, popular with families for swimming, sunbathing, fishing, and enjoying fresh trout by the water.
The final stop before reaching the lake is the village of Arkyt, where you can stay overnight and rest before continuing.
From Arkyt, Sary-Chelek is 20 kilometers away. The lake can be reached by car — ideally one with high clearance for better comfort and safety.
