PROFESSION JOURNALIST: INSIDE LOOK

CHRIS STANTON

General editor of the International Department of Information (Kazakh-TV), television presenter of Global Talk

Work experience as a journalist — 5 years

PROFESSIONAL WAY

PROFESSION JOURNALIST: INSIDE LOOK

I wasn’t initially a journalist to be honest. This kind of manifested later, when I left my home country. Before I had a company of buying and selling cars within USA and also I shipped them abroad.

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances that company after a few years didn’t work out. So I was looking what to do next. Because I never worked for anyone and I was always an entrepreneur of some sort.

PROFESSION JOURNALIST: INSIDE LOOK

I had a job offer in Seoul, South Korea to head an English curriculum development department for the government of South Korea. My college background was similar to this so I accepted the job. When I got there I also had an opportunity to work on television for a little bit. During those years when I worked I found a new direction in life which was journalism. And from that moment my true journey started.

Luckily I received everything and much more

ABOUT EXPECTANCIES

My expectations were to be able to have the tools available to succeed in my job and progress further. And luckily I received everything and much more.

PROFESSION JOURNALIST: INSIDE LOOK

I imagined in the future that I would be able to be on television and become recognized for my work. Because without recognition I don’t believe I would have the drive to be inspired to move forward.

My main goal in my job is to promote Kazakhstan’s political policies, culture and as well as tourism opportunities from a western perspective. The world is so globalized these days that more and more people are spending their lives abroad for either investment, tourism or even for love. So my ultimate aim is to show that Kazakhstan is an open minded and progressive country not just for surrounding countries but also for people far abroad.

ABOUT PECULIARITIES AND DIFFICULTIES

I work in the main media place in Kazakhstan which is called KazMediaCenter. There are no foreigners in this building only locals. I would say there are about 10 or so different television channels that broadcast, edit, and make TV shows within there. So I had an opportunity to speak with many locals and get the inside perspective about real life in Kazakhstan. I think many foreigners here in Kazakhstan work along other foreigners. But I would say I am one of the few that works alongside only locals on day to day bases.

My main goal in my job is to promote Kazakhstan’s political policies

Also my television show “Global Talk” is peculiar in itself because it is one of the few political shows that I know of that is written and produced in the English language that is about Kazakhstan.

I had some difficulties learning the local language but after a while I feel more confident and I can speak much better than before.

PROFESSION JOURNALIST: INSIDE LOOK

I would say that I had to change the way I worked, because in Kazakhstan like every other country works in a different way. Before when I worked in South Korea there was times where I was at the office from 7am to 10pm and this was a normal occasion. But when I moved to here from South Korea I was trying to adjust to the work schedule and pace. Because Kazakhs enjoy their leisure time, but also they like to work hard, but in a quality based manner. They have a nice balance of family life and job life. In my opinion this balance is great but I just had to adjustment myself a bit.

I think to become a journalist you have to be open minded

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS

I think to become a journalist you have to be open-minded, flexible, have a creative niche that you always try to reinvent and also be able to commit to not just starting a project but finishing it with the best quality possible so the viewer can really interpret the story for maximum reader exposure.
