National holidays of Uzbekistan: from Navruz to Constitution Day

Throughout the year, Uzbekistan celebrates a variety of state and international holidays. Here is a selection of the official holidays in the country.


New Year


January 1

Traditionally, like in many parts of the world, New Year is celebrated in Uzbekistan on the night of December 31 to January 1. It is one of the favorite holidays of the locals. The preparation period lasts more than a month, with all city streets decorated, and Uzbekistanis gathering with family and friends to celebrate.


Defender of the Fatherland Day


January 14

This holiday symbolizes the freedom of the country's military sphere and is also considered a celebration for all men. On this day, a large parade of military units is held in the main square, featuring a military orchestra, award ceremonies, and congratulatory speeches.


International Women's Day


March 8

Celebrated in many countries around the world, this holiday originated as a day of solidarity among women in the fight for women's rights and emancipation. On this day, women are showered with attention, and concerts, festive programs, and theatrical performances are organized in their honor.


Navruz


March 21

A holiday with a centuries-old history, Navruz is celebrated across Central Asia. It marks the arrival of spring and renewal, coinciding with the vernal equinox. Traditionally, people prepare a festive dish called sumalak, which is cooked all night. Lavish feasts and celebrations take place.


Day of Remembrance and Honor


May 9

This state holiday is dedicated to the memory of compatriots affected by the years of World War II. Citizens lay flowers at monuments and memorials.


Ramadan Hayit


This Muslim holiday marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. It symbolizes purification and spiritual renewal. The day before Hayit, each family prepares traditional baked goods and sweets in addition to pilaf. On the holiday itself, people participate in prayers, congratulate each other, and host feasts.


Kurban Hayit


An Islamic holiday marking the end of the Hajj, celebrated 70 days after Ramadan Hayit. On this day, animal sacrifices are made, and in the evening, pre-holiday pilaf is prepared to share with family and neighbors.


Independence Day


September 1

This holiday commemorates the proclamation of the independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Mass celebrations, concerts, fireworks, and parades are organized annually. Citizens enjoy a three-day holiday.


Constitution Day


December 8

This holiday celebrates the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan. It is a day to honor the fundamental law of the country, and it is declared a public holiday. City streets are decorated, and festive events, exhibitions, and concerts are held for the public.
