The Expat Centre of the Astana International Financial Centre marked a significant milestone with the launch of the Expat Loyalty Club Community — a dynamic new initiative aimed at enriching the experience of foreign professionals living in Kazakhstan. Designed to foster deeper community ties, the platform offers exclusive benefits including discount privileges and enhanced opportunities for professional and social networking.
The launch event, held amidst the festive atmosphere of a Nauryz celebration, served as a vibrant cultural backdrop and a fitting setting for the gathering of the expatriate community. We spoke with several international residents, who shared their reflections on life in Kazakhstan, the significance of the new — AIFC Loyalty Club Community initiative, and the evolving role of the AIFC Expat Centre.
Todd Flanagan, Head of School, Kazakhstan International School Astana
On the Event
It’s a real pleasure to be at the AIFC today. I’m familiar with a number of expatriates based here, and events such as this are vital in bringing the community together. I’ve spent around four years in Central Asia, with the last two in Kazakhstan. Nauryz is a deeply meaningful tradition — typically ushering in spring, though today we’ve had a touch of snow, which adds a unique charm to the celebration.
On Living in Kazakhstan
Astana is an extraordinary city. Each year, I recruit international educators, and the question I’m most often asked is, ‘What is life like there?’ I tell them they are truly fortunate — Astana offers an exceptionally smooth transition for those arriving from abroad. The people here are welcoming, cultured, and live life with great enthusiasm. It’s a remarkable posting.
On the AIFC Expat Centre
As Astana continues to grow as an international hub, the services provided by the Expat Centre become ever more vital. For our staff and faculty arriving from overseas, the support offered — be it administrative or advisory — makes the process of settling in significantly easier. It’s a tremendous asset.
Jordan Obry, Associate Producer, EPP Kazakhstan Film Production
On the Event
These gatherings are always worthwhile. I try to attend as many as possible since they remain quite rare. The venue was an excellent choice — anyone familiar with Astana knows that the Expo area and the AIFC are central meeting points for the expat community. Today’s event offers a wonderful chance to experience traditional cuisine, clothing, and customs associated with Nauryz.
On Living in Kazakhstan
I’m French and have lived in Kazakhstan for over seven years. I met my wife here, which is why I’ve made it my home. While I’ve spent time in Almaty, most of my life here has been in Astana. I love the city — the people are generous, and the urban landscape is stunning. Winter can be intense, yes, but there’s something serene about the snow-covered streets. Astana has a peacefulness I truly value.
On the AIFC Expat Centre
The services offered by the Expat Centre have become indispensable. When I first arrived, navigating administrative processes was quite chaotic. Now, with a dedicated department and English-speaking staff, it’s far more manageable. I often recommend the Centre to newcomers or friends in need of guidance — whether for visas or general support. It’s heartening to see the initiative grow.
David Cleave, Former Executive Director, Head of Mission, International Science & Technology Center
On the Event
It’s encouraging to see the Expat Centre uniting international professionals and entrepreneurs — people who, like myself, have chosen to establish ventures here in Kazakhstan. Today’s launch of the Expat Loyalty Club Community is a meaningful step forward. It’s a support mechanism that will, I hope, benefit many more professionals connected with the AIFC.
On Living in Kazakhstan
I’ve been living in Kazakhstan for 11 years now, and I know the country intimately — both Astana and beyond. Kazakhstan is truly a remarkable nation. I’ve made lasting friendships and have cherished every moment. I look forward to many more years here.
On the AIFC Expat Centre
The Centre fulfils a very necessary role. I’ve personally utilised their services and found them to be highly efficient and professional. As the range of services continues to expand — particularly with initiatives like the loyalty programme — I believe the Centre will become an even greater resource for those arriving in Kazakhstan.
Darren Jones, Headmaster, Ardingly Astana
On the Event
It’s a real pleasure to be part of today’s gathering. The introduction of the loyalty initiative is a fantastic idea — providing not only practical benefits like discounts, but also encouraging networking and collaboration among expats. Events like this create a vital sense of community, especially during such an important and festive period.
On Living in Kazakhstan
The first thing people usually ask me is how I manage the winter. The truth is — I love it. I’ve lived in other cold climates, and I find Astana to be an incredibly welcoming and vibrant city. The openness of the place, along with the warmth and kindness of its people, makes it a joy to live here.
On the AIFC Expat Centre
While our organisation is large enough to manage many services internally, I’ve found the Centre to be a valuable support for smaller enterprises and independent expats. In the early stages of setting up Ardingly Astana, we benefited greatly from their advice.
