Living in Kazakhstan has been a journey full of cultural discoveries for this French IT specialist. In our conversation, he shares what surprised him most about Astana, how local hospitality reminded him of home, and why he feels a personal drive to introduce French electronic music to Kazakhstani audiences.
Philip Sand, 44 years, city — Astana, IT Manager at the French Embassy, @philipsand.dj
About myself
I arrived in Astana in 2022, so it's been three years now. Before that, I worked at the French Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine, and in Islamabad, Pakistan. I’ve been working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for over 10 years. I’m very dedicated to my job and I really enjoy being in touch with the French community here in Astana.
Kazakhstan was a big surprise for me. In France it is not very well known. Usually, people don’t come here for tourism. But coming to Astana and exploring nearby cities was a very positive experience. I didn’t expect such diverse landscapes and new things to discover.
About activities
I work full-time as an IT manager at the French Embassy, which takes up most of my time. Outside of my professional duties, I have a deep passion for music — I’m both a teacher and a producer. I perform regularly and also create music.
My initial motivation for joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was to serve my country. I’ve always aspired to work abroad, represent France, and help people better understand the work we do as diplomats. That goal is what led me to apply for this position.
Music, however, is something entirely separate from my job — it’s a long-standing personal interest. As a teenager, I played the piano and trombone and studied at the Conservatory of Toulouse. But I was also fascinated by electronic music, and traditional instruments didn’t quite take me where I wanted to go creatively. So I began producing music on my own.
During the COVID lockdown, I realized I wasn’t practicing as much as I’d like. So, three years ago, I enrolled in DJ and electronic music lessons in Paris with a well-known French DJ. When I later moved to Kazakhstan, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to start sharing this passion more publicly.
These days, I work at the Embassy during the day and dedicate my evenings to music — whether it’s practicing, exploring new sounds, or staying updated on the music scene. On weekends, I occasionally perform at local venues in Astana, usually once a month, given my busy schedule.
About musical event
The idea is to invite international DJs — especially French ones — and organize an event that introduces people here to the sound of French electronic music. France has a vibrant and diverse electronic scene, but unfortunately, there are very few opportunities to experience it live in Kazakhstan.
As someone deeply passionate about this genre, I feel a certain responsibility to help bring French DJs to Astana. That’s the goal. We’re aiming to make it happen by the end of the year, although the exact date is still to be confirmed.
On Kazakhstan
Astana has a lot to offer for foreigners — from museums and cultural events to the chance to meet new people. It’s a great way to discover Kazakh culture and enrich yourself through new experiences. I try to make the most of my time here.
I live near the river, and at night, with the bridge and towers lit up, it’s a peaceful and beautiful place. In winter, when the river freezes and people walk across the ice, it creates a truly unique atmosphere. I also enjoy skiing and other winter activities.
One of the biggest surprises for me was the length of the winter! In France, we have four seasons, but here, winter lasts much longer. It was challenging at first, but I’ve adapted. Now, I can even say I feel a little Kazakh myself.
I’ve attended a few Kazakh weddings — the traditions, the outfits, the food — it was a memorable experience. I even tried horse meat, and I have to say, it was delicious.
People here are very kind and open-minded. I’ve traveled quite a bit, and I was genuinely impressed by how welcoming and friendly everyone is.
I’ve been to Borovoe to enjoy the lake and the natural scenery, and I’ve visited Almaty — a true cultural hub. I’m planning a trip to Turkestan to visit the museum and explore the city.
Advices
When colleagues ask me about moving here, my message is clear: don’t hesitate. Kazakhstan is a country worth discovering — it’s welcoming, endlessly intriguing, and, for many, becomes one of the most rewarding experiences of their lives. I frequently advise people considering relocation to embrace the adventure and explore it for themselves.
As for me, next year will likely mark the end of my assignment in Kazakhstan. My plan is to continue working diligently at the Embassy while also nurturing my passion for music.
