Nicholas Bowler lived and worked in Kyrgyzstan long before he became the British Ambassador. In an interview for our publication, he explained why he decided to return and what projects he is currently developing between the two countries.
About me
I started my career in the private sector. For about seven years, managed a project in a consulting company, which was implemented with the support of the British government. Then I moved to the civil service, working in an organization that later merged with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
I focused on humanitarian aid and development issues. I thought it was the best way to make an impact on the world. The more time I spent in government, the more I realized that I could do better as an Ambassador to another country.
About moving
In 2015, I completed my contract work in Afghanistan ahead of schedule. Then I was offered to head the UK Government's program in Kyrgyzstan. This came as a surprise to me — I didn't know anything about the country before. I realized that I would not be able to agree immediately, and decided to come to Kyrgyzstan with my wife for a short time before accepting the proposed position.
A week after I moved, I called London and said, “Where can I sign a contract?” I came to the country by accident. And I'm glad it happened. It took me a while to realize that I wanted to work in Kyrgyzstan.
About first impressions
During my first visit, I didn't speak Kyrgyz or Russian. When we were driving from the airport to Bishkek, I saw signs around me and wondered: “How will I navigate the city?”. And then I saw the mountains for the first time. This is an exciting moment that sets the tone for everything I've experienced in the country.
Kyrgyzstan is a wonderful place to live. There may be a lot of surprises for Europeans, but it's great to discover the country for what it is, to see the natural beauty and combine this with the opportunity to work on important goals for my home country.
About activities
In June 2023, I assumed my duties as the British Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan. Diplomatic relations between our countries are actively developing.
One of the most significant projects is the seasonal agricultural workers program. This year, about 10,000 Kyrgyzstanis went to work in the UK. My country relies on seasonal workers, and Kyrgyzstanis get a lot of experience and can earn good money by honest work.
We cooperate in the field of culture, art and sports. A few weeks ago, the coaches of the Wales national rugby union team visited Kyrgyzstan. They conducted training sessions for the youth national team of Kyrgyzstan. This is a great way to show that sports can be inclusive, involving men, women, and children with different abilities. This event also proves that Kyrgyzstan is ready to host global brands. I believe that this is good for our bilateral relations.
It is important for me to do work that brings something positive to the world
We also plan to hold a festival of British and Kyrgyz music, culture and creativity together with KOLFEST. The program includes lectures from creative specialists, a session on organizing and developing festivals from a British agency, and a performance by the famous British DJ T-Roy.
First of all, ambassadors represent their country and its values abroad. This is especially important in the modern world, where false information can spread. An ambassador can assume responsibility for his home country. Ambassadors also help bring countries together to address global issues such as climate conditions and the environment.
It is important for me to do work that brings something positive to the world. I feel like I'm right where I should be.
About people and traditions
Residents of Kyrgyzstan are warm and hospitable people. I enjoy spending time with the Embassy team, meeting old acquaintances, and making new friends. Previously, I often traveled around Kyrgyzstan with my wife. We stayed in yurts. It's a wonderful experience. We have two children, and I plan to show them what it's like to sleep in a yurt.
One of my local friends, captain of the “Dostuk” kok-boru team, taught me how to play this traditional game. It was an amazing experience. I was happy to attend the Kok-bor World Championship in Issyk-Kul and now I am looking forward to the start of regular games.
Boorsoki and kymyz are often offered at events. I was shocked when I first tried this milky drink, as I was expecting something sweet. But after trying it out, I realized that I like kymyz. Among other local dishes, I like kuurdak and shish kebab.
About Kyrgyzstan
I like living in Bishkek. I consider this city to be one of the hidden treasures of the world. My wife and I used to know all the best local restaurants and bars. Now we don't have much time, so we spend more time with the kids in our neighborhood. My favorite place for breakfast is the Truffle and Coffee shop.
I visited all the regions of Kyrgyzstan. I like the city of Osh — I visit it as often as I can. The most beautiful natural place I consider Sary Chelek. I went there with my family and friends and still remember the happy experience. I recently visited Talas for the first time. I will definitely return to this place as a tourist, because for me it is an unknown part of the country. I like to meet people who know the local history and can tell you a lot about petroglyphs or ancient legends. I want to visit Batken and Naryn again to see these parts of the country again.
About plans
Our Embassy will continue to work on strengthening bilateral relations, expanding cooperation on combating climate change, developing economic partnership and trade.
I am happy to return to Kyrgyzstan. For me, being an ambassador in this country is a dream job.
