Gastrotour of Central Asia. What to eat in Tashkent, instead of pilaf

On our YouTube channel WEproject we publish a series of videos about gastronomic travels in Central Asia. In one of the episodes we visited five of the most delicious places in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. The main task was to find out what you can eat in Tashkent besides pilaf and how much it will cost.


Chorsu Market

Gul-khanum is a vegetarian dish made of dough with potatoes, onions and tomato sauce. It is cooked on steam.

Cost: 2000 soums or 0.16$

Lumpy beef kebab — marinated meat put on a skewer.

Cost: 15 000 soums or 1.2$


Cafe Nomdor

Samsa is a baked dish made of puff pastry with stuffing inside, most often with meat and onions, but there are also with chicken and cheese, with herbs, with potatoes and others. Served with sauce made of grated tomatoes.

Cost: from 5000 soums or 0.4$.


Cafe Eldor

Kazon Kabob means "kebab in a cauldron". It is meat fried to a crispy crust with potatoes cooked in oil. It is traditionally made of beef, but it can be made with lamb and chicken.

Cost: 45 000 soums or 3.5$.


Lumpy beef shashlik

Cost: 19 000 soums or 1.5$

Kiima or lulia kebab is a dish cooked on fire, made of minced lamb with spices in the form of small sausages.

Cost: 15 000 soums or 1.2$

Chargrilled champignons — a great alternative to the usual kebab.

Cost: 15 000 soums or 1.2$

Potatoes on skewers — a taste that brings you back to childhood.

Cost: 8000 soums or 0.6$

Minor somsa

Samsa with meat — one of the most popular dishes of Uzbekistan.

Cost: 9000 soums or 0.7$


Shohona cafe

Chuchvara — small dumplings made of beef or mutton in broth.

Cost: 27 400 soums or 2$

Domlyama — vegetable stew with stewed mutton meat.

Cost: 65 000 soums or 5.1$


AKSU by Chustiy

Naryn is a popular dish made of thinly sliced dough with finely chopped boiled meat. It is served with rich broth and kazy.

Cost: 72 000 soums or 5.7$

Beshbarmak is a traditional dish consisting of boiled meat with potatoes and thin dough poured with broth and onions. This establishment also adds sundried tomatoes and red hot pepper.

Cost: 115 000 soums or $9.1.
