ABOUT ASTANA

I arrived in Astana on September 1, 2014 and have been living here for a year and a half. I arrived here at night. The first place I went to was the Grand Park Esil Hotel. When I firstly arrived it was dark, but the Baiterek and Khan Shatyr were lighted, so I could see them on the way from the airport. While I was driving to the old town, I noticed that the city is actually a little smaller than I had expected.

I am the Ambassador of Sweden to Kazakhstan. I was interested in the country and the region as a whole, so the Swedish government decided to take me on this job. It was a combination of a great interest to Kazakhstan and patriotic feelings towards Sweden that helped me become an ambassador.

Before being taken on, I’d been twice to Kazakhstan. I visited Almaty during the conferences organized by the government of Kazakhstan within the OSCE in 2005-2006. The positive impressions I received in Almaty were another reason for my long stay. I’d worked for three years in other CIS countries, in cities such as St.Petersburg and Kiev. So, I was a little aware of your country, yet I learned moreafter coming here.

I was pleased to discover your traditional dishes, culture. I am an avid traveler, and plan to visit all the regions of the country. I still have about half left to see. I’ve visited museums of history, both local and regional; I’ve seen memorial houses of the people who contributed a lot to the history of Kazakhstan.

I like Kazakh cuisine. Visiting different restaurants and cafes, I prefer to order Kazakh food instead of Western. In addition, here you can find some elements of Russian and Western cultures. I think people’d better learn a lot about the city that unites cultures of different peoples.

I feel comfortable and free in Astana. Having come here my life hasn’t changed a lot. I try to live a usual life, fulfilling duties of an ambassador. I think that Astana is a city where you can enjoy both work and personal life. I’ve been permeated by many impressions.

My favorite place in Astana is "Astana Opera". I often go there and think that Kazakhstan can be proud of it.

There is a good infrastructure, lots of hobby groups for children. Groups are both sports and artistic, and there are plenty to choose from.

Astana has a great advantage over other larger capitals, as it is a small capital not overpopulated yet. Many places are in an accessible remoteness and to get the destination point doesn’t take much time.

I’ve already been to Atyrau, Karaganda, Kokshetau, Petropavlovsk, Kostanay, Taraz, Shymkent. Kazakhstan is a huge and diverse country. I’ve witnessed a rich cultural life of Karaganda: theaters, philharmonic societies. In the South the advantage is that you can see an ancient Central Asian culture and taste different fruits. I advise foreigners to visit Kazakhstan. They’d better read something about the city and the country before coming to be a little prepared.

I'm a northerner and I’m used to long cold winters. It’s freezing cold in Astana, but there is much sunlight and the days are longer than in Stockholm. Therefore the winter here is somewhat softer than in Sweden.

I was lucky to organize many cultural events in Astana. Last year we celebrated the National Day of Sweden, held a concert in the Astana Philharmonic Hall in the "Congress Hall." We also organized an art exhibition in the "Kulanshi" gallery in the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation. I think the most vivid impressions are those that I got, acquiring knowledge about the country, and contributing to the cultural life of the country. I’ve been taking part in the Epiphany celebration for two years, plunging into an ice hole on the Ishim River. I and a few of my ambassador colleagues celebrate this event together. After swimming we go to bania.

This year Kazakhstan celebrates the 25th anniversary of Independence. I congratulate all residents and Astana on the celebration of such an important anniversary like this.
