Transport in Kyrgyzstan: a guide to transportation options for expats

If you're new to Kyrgyzstan or planning to stay for a while, understanding the local transportation options can help you navigate cities like Bishkek with ease. From buses and taxis to bike rentals and electric scooters, this guide provides an overview of the available services and practical tips to ensure a smooth travel experience.

Buses

Bus transportation plays a significant role in Kyrgyzstan's public transit system, offering various options for travel within cities and between regions. City buses operate within urban areas, allowing passengers to travel both seated and standing. Suburban buses provide transport between towns and typically offer more comfortable conditions. Intercity buses connect major cities and regions across the country.

Passengers are required to board and exit buses only at designated stops. Payment can be made either in cash or via contactless methods, with prices ranging from 17 KGS for card payments to 20 KGS for cash. In recent years, various services and mobile applications like 2GIS have emerged to help passengers plan their bus journeys, providing information on schedules and routes. To make your trips more convenient, be sure to check schedules, especially on weekends, use transport cards to save money, and study routes in advance to avoid confusion and delays. These tips will help make your bus rides more comfortable and safe.

Taxis

Several taxi services in Kyrgyzstan make getting around cities convenient and safe. Yandex.Taxi is one of the most popular and widely accessible services in Bishkek, offering a user-friendly app, transparent fares, and the option to pay through the app. There are also several local taxi services, such as Bi Taxi and Navi Taxi, which offer mobile apps with real-time ride tracking and transparent fare calculations. These companies focus on safety, checking drivers and providing comfortable conditions for passengers. You can also use other apps like Jorgo Taxi, Tumar Taxi, or Deluxe.

Car Rentals

There are several car rental services in Kyrgyzstan that offer a variety of terms and prices. AutoPark provides economy cars starting from 2500 KGS, crossovers from 4500 KGS, and SUVs from 6000 KGS. To rent a car, you must be over 25 years old and have at least three years of driving experience. Autotour offers rentals of passenger cars from 2500 KGS, crossovers from 4000 KGS, and SUVs from 6000 KGS, with requirements including a minimum age of 23 and three years of driving experience. TakeCars offers a wide selection of vehicles, 24/7 roadside assistance, and accepts cards from various countries. Cab.kg offers cars like the Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Solaris, and Toyota Rav 4. FreeWays allows you to rent a car without a deposit, with a minimum rental period of one day and prices starting at 2500 KGS, offering a range from economy to premium class.

Bicycles

Bicycle rentals in Kyrgyzstan are becoming increasingly popular among tourists and locals, especially for exploring cities and natural landscapes. To rent a bicycle, you can use the services of local shops, tourist centers, and specialized companies like Freebike in Bishkek. This service offers a wide selection of bicycles, including city, mountain, downhill-specific, and electric models. Renting a bicycle usually requires providing identification and possibly a deposit. Payment can be made in cash or through electronic systems. It's essential to follow safety rules — use a helmet, check the bike's condition before riding, and choose safe routes. Some hotels and tourist centers also offer bike rentals, which adds convenience for tourists looking for local biking opportunities. The best time for cycling in Kyrgyzstan is during the summer months, from June to September, when the weather is most favorable for outdoor activities. However, be aware of potential weather changes in mountainous areas and prepare accordingly.

Electric Scooters

Electric scooter rental services offer a convenient way to get around the city, allowing users to find, rent, and pay for scooters via mobile apps such as SunRent. To rent an electric scooter, you need to register in the app, providing your personal details and payment method. After registration, you can find the nearest available scooter on the map and activate it by scanning the QR code. Payment is made through the app, with tariffs depending on the rental time or a fixed cost per trip.

It's important to remember safety: use a helmet, follow traffic rules, and return the scooter to designated parking areas. Before starting your trip, check the technical condition of the scooter, including brakes and tires, and plan your route in advance to avoid congestion and unsafe road sections.
