Kyrgyz national musical instruments: from komuz to dobulbas

Music is an important part of Kyrgyz culture. In this article we will tell about the national musical instruments that have been sounding for centuries and uniting generations.

Komuz

The musical instrument has become one of the symbols of the Kyrgyz people. It is a three-string plucked instrument, and its melodies sound especially gentle.

Ooz komuz

The Kyrgyz jaw harp represents a small metal instrument. Musicians clamp it in the mouth and play with the help of breathing and fingers.

Kyl kiyäk

A two-string bowed instrument, the body of which is made from apricot or walnut wood, and then covered with skin. The strings and the bow were traditionally made from horsehair.

Chopo-choor

A vessel-shaped clay flute, which was traditionally used by Kyrgyz shepherds and horse herders. Its timbre is soft, but at the same time deep and mesmerizing.

Sybyzgy

Sybyzgy remains one of the most ancient Kyrgyz wind musical instruments, and it is made of wood. Historically it was often used by shepherds and at celebrations.

Dobulbas

A traditional percussion instrument, representing a drum, the body of which is made from juniper, and the upper part is covered with skin.
