The world in today's realities is impossible to imagine without computers. They have become an integral part of our daily life, helping in work, communication, and even entertainment.

Why do many people have red eyes when working at the computer? The gadget becomes the cause of fatigue, as a consequence — red eyes.

Everyone who spends a lot of time at the computer is familiar with the feeling of tension and fatigue in the eyes by the end of the day. This is not surprising, given that our organs of vision are subjected to constant strain due to monitors, lighting, and other factors associated with the use of technology. Therefore, along with the benefits of using computers, certain problems arise. One of the most common is eye fatigue.

It is important to know ways to prevent this condition, how to properly remove it.

The problem of eye fatigue when working at the computer

Eye fatigue when working at a PC is a condition also known as computer vision syndrome or digital vision fatigue.

How to deal with eye fatigue

When working at a monitor for long periods of time, the blink rate decreases. When a person works at the computer, he is emotionally strained, he begins to blink less. Therefore, if the eye dries out, a person can have the above-mentioned dry eye syndrome. The main signs of such a condition can be called dryness, a feeling of discomfort and foreign body in the organs of vision, burning. It is not uncommon for the eyes to quickly turn red.

Also among the causes of fatigue of the organs of vision when working at the PC:

  • Poor lighting in the room — can cause eye muscles to strain.

  • Location of the monitor too close to the eyes — often increases the load on the organs of vision.

  • Reflection of light from the screen or glare on the surface — causes additional eye strain, reduces the quality of vision.

Also asthenia of eye muscles and deterioration of accommodation can cause constant focus on static objects on the screen: text or image.

What can be the dangers of eye fatigue

The long-term effects of eye fatigue can lead to serious vision problems and can even have a negative impact on your overall health.

Constant strain on the eye muscles often leads to the development of short-term or even permanent focusing problems, which reduces the quality of vision and can cause problems with clarity of vision.

Continuous feeling of eye fatigue is often the cause of headaches, tension in the neck and shoulder area, as well as deterioration of well-being in general. In this case, a person has difficulty performing everyday tasks, and productivity decreases.

Long-term overstretching of the eye muscles increases the risk of developing more serious diseases:

  • cataracts

  • glaucoma

  • degenerative diseases of the retina.

Constant eye fatigue can also adversely affect your health, causing stress, irritability, and mood deterioration.

How wearing glasses or lenses affects eye fatigue

Wearing glasses or contact lenses can have both positive and negative effects on eye fatigue, depending on the situation and the individual's vision. These corrective devices can have the following effects:

  • If glasses or lenses provide proper refraction, they can significantly reduce eye fatigue. It is easier for the organs of vision to focus on objects, the need to tense muscles is reduced.

  • Most modern glasses have a special anti-reflective coating, which helps to reduce the reflection of light from the lens surface. This is especially useful when working at a PC, when glare causes additional eye strain and increases fatigue.

  • Contact lenses help to prevent dry eye, as they do not interfere with the natural mechanism of blinking, as it happens with glasses. However, proper lens care is important; you should not wear them for longer than the recommended period of time to avoid additional eye irritation.

If outdated or inappropriate lenses are worn, it can cause discomfort, increased eye fatigue.

Some glasses are designed specifically for work at the PC, have anti-reflective coating, which helps to quickly relieve eye strain during prolonged use of the screen.

In general, properly selected glasses or contact lenses, to which the owner provides proper care, provide comfortable vision when working at the computer. However, it is important to consult with an ophthalmologist to select the most appropriate means of correction and follow the recommendations for their use and care.

Eye exercises and massage to relieve eye fatigue

Exercises and massage for the eyes are effective ways to quickly relieve fatigue of the organs of vision, reduce stress after prolonged activity at the PC. Let us present some simple training and massage techniques:

  • Blinking — conscious and frequent, it helps to moisturize the eyes, thereby mitigating fatigue if the organs of vision turn red. Blink slowly and deeply, then quickly. Alternate the movements. Repeat eye exercises for fatigue several times.

  • “Eight” — follow the gaze of the imaginary number “8”, slowly drawn in front of you. Such an exercise helps to relax the eye muscles, improve blood circulation.

  • Remote focus — interrupt your work at the PC from time to time. Look at remote objects to diversify the focus of the eyes, prevent their overstrain.

In addition to exercises, an excellent method to help the organs of vision quickly relieve fatigue, relax — massage. The procedure is performed around the eyes. Light massaging of this area with soft circular movements of index fingers helps to reduce tension, improves blood circulation.

Drops to relieve fatigue

  • Maxitrol.

  • Optivar.

However, it is important to remember that the drops are designed to temporarily relieve symptoms and do not address the underlying causes of fatigue. Therefore, if it becomes permanent or is accompanied by other serious symptoms, for example, the organs of vision become red, etc., it is important to consult a doctor to assess the state of vision and get recommendations for further therapy and prevention.

To sum up

Taking care of your eyes when working at a PC requires awareness and taking appropriate eye care measures. This not only promotes visual health, but also enhances overall comfort during activity.

To address the problem of fatigue, take precautionary measures. Remember that when working at a computer for long periods of time, your eyes need rest. Take a break every 20 to 30 minutes. Close your eyes for 30-40 seconds or do a special exercise, massage: the tension will subside and you can continue to work. Remember these simple rules. Breaks help to quickly relieve eye fatigue, reduce the risk of vision problems.

In addition to eye exercises and massage, you should adhere to other recommendations. Thus, it is important to properly adjust the monitor, selecting the optimal distance and level of illumination, and avoid reflections and glare.

Also to reduce the impact of negative factors on the eyes when working at the monitor will help to use special glasses — with anti-reflective and protective coating.
