Budget travel: how to spend a weekend in Bishkek for $50

Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, offers a vibrant mix of a historical charm, mountain views, rich culture, and affordability — making it an ideal destination for budget travelers. Here's how to enjoy an unforgettable weekend in Bishkek for just $50.

Why Bishkek

Located at the foot of the majestic Tian Shan mountains, Bishkek is one of Central Asia’s most welcoming and affordable cities. With tree-lined boulevards, unique architecture, buzzing bazaars, and a lively youth culture, it offers an authentic experience without breaking the bank. Here's how to stretch $50 which is approximately 4500 KGS over a two-day weekend.

Daily costs

Accommodation: Bishkek has several budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses starting from $10-15. We recommend:

ololo Yurt— cozy, central, with breakfast included

Apple Hostel Bishkek— near the bus station, popular with backpackers

Dorm beds range from $7 to $10 per night. Opt for a shared room to save more.

Food: breakfast is included in most hostels, if not, try a local bakery for a fresh samsa and tea for $1 and lunch at a local café: $3-5. Dinners vary from $4-6, eat like a local at Navat Teahouse , a teahouse with Kyrgyz décor and hearty meals.

Try traditional Kyrgyz cuisine:

Lagman— hand-pulled noodles

Plov — rice pilaf

Manti — dumplings

Tip: ask for kumys —fermented mare’s milk if you’re feeling adventurous.

On foot destinations

Walk the city center — it’s free! Bishkek is compact and walkable, explore this places:

Ala-Too Square — the heart of the city, a popular meeting spot surrounded by government buildings, fountains, and monuments. Great for photos and people-watching.

The Changing of the Guard— held in front of the Independence Monument in Ala-Too Square, this ceremonial routine is performed hourly and is free to watch.

Oak Park — one of the oldest parks in Bishkek. Lined with shady trees and open-air sculptures, it’s a calm space to relax and enjoy local art.

The Soviet Mosaics of Bishkek — scattered throughout the city, these massive, colorful mosaics reflect Soviet history and public art culture. Perfect for a self-guided photo walk.

Osh Bazaar visit — free to enter, it is a sensory overload. Browse through spices, dried fruit, wool goods, and traditional hats.

What to buy

Even on a tight budget, Bishkek offers great souvenir options that are locally made, lightweight, and easy to pack. With just $3-5, here’s what you can take home:

Kalpak keychains or magnets — miniature versions of the iconic Kyrgyz felt hat.

Wool felt coasters or ornaments — made using traditional shyrdak or ala-kiyiz techniques.

Local spices — saffron, cumin, and chili flakes sold by weight at Osh Bazaar.

Dried apricots or fruit leather — sweet, healthy snacks perfect for travel.

Handmade soap or balm infused with Kyrgyz herbs or mountain honey.

Nature and culture

Morning trip to Ala-Archa National Park — $5-10, which is just 40 kilometers from the city, this stunning alpine park offers hiking trails, waterfalls, and panoramic views. If you want to get there cheaply, take a minibus from Osh Bazaar to Kashka-Suu village — $1 one-way. The entry fee itself is also $1. Then hike to the Ak-Sai waterfall or enjoy a picnic. Don't forget about an afternoon culture stop: only for $1-3 visit the State History Museum or the Kyrgyz National Museum of Fine Arts. Entry fees are low, and exhibits are surprisingly rich.
